The prestigious award recognises the research of everyday Australians who are striving to solve some of the most critical emerging challenges our country is facing.
As a 2019 Churchill Fellow, Dr Och, who is also an Adjunct Associate Professor with the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the UNSW in Sydney, will be given the opportunity to progress his research into a sustainable GIS geotechnical database to capture present data for the future. He will be visiting several countries including Malaysia, China, UK, Netherlands and Switzerland.
Dr Och is well regarded for his expertise in the discipline of geology. He recently led the geological investigations underneath Sydney Harbour as part of the Sydney Metro project. This work revealed vital information about the rich history beneath the iconic bridge, including charcoal over 50,000 years old. He is currently the Geotechnical Lead for the Sydney Metro West portion of the project.
This fellowship demonstrates Dr Och’s vision towards a more sustainable and integrated approach to capturing and using spatial data in Australia that will lead to better business decisions.
In addition to winning this fellowship, Dr Och recently secured CGeol Chartership with the Geological Society of London, recognising his high level of geological knowledge, skills and experience.
