Caulfield to Dandenong Continues to Shine Brightly for the Community

Last week, two Gold Awards from Consult Australia continued the Caufield to Dandenong (CTD) Level Crossing Removal Project’s impressive winning streak for multiple successes after it eliminated nine dangerous level crossings and delivered five new train stations along with hectares of new community parkland.

The 2019 Gold Award for Sustainability in Design recognised the project’s sustainable achievements through innovative design and applying sustainable materials and principles. The CTD project’s elevated design concept incorporated sustainable design and innovative use of materials to raise the bar for future infrastructure projects while it enabled significant positive sustainability outcomes.

 

The 2019 Gold Award for Project Team Collaboration recognises exemplary collaboration and project achievements. The CTD ‘skyrail’ design is the first of its kind in Victoria and, early on, the design team realised that digital collaboration was essential for managing the complex challenges. Key objectives of community initiatives included generating widespread understanding of ways the elevated rail solution would benefit communities, and then helping local businesses remain operational during construction.

An Alliance of Lendlease, CPB Contractors, WSP and Aurecon completed the CTD Level Crossing Removal Project in partnership with the Level Crossing Removal Project and Metro Trains Melbourne.

 

Mike Jenkins from the Alliance Leadership says, “These two latest award wins are the result of our team’s passion for collaboration and sustainability and our commitment to implementing all the initiatives we set out to achieve.

 

“We have created the largest urban open space in Melbourne since the Botanical Gardens were established in mid 1800s. Communities previously separated by rail lines are now joined again and we have received great feedback about the new space.”

The Consult award wins are just CTD’s latest gongs. The project was lauded at the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia awards dinner for its well-deserved 2019 Innovation and Impact award.

 

Earlier in October, the project also earned a Landscape Architecture Award in the Infrastructure category from the Australian Institute of Architects.

 

The CTD project team maintained a whole-of-life vision and sustainability approach from design through to construction and operation. All worked tirelessly to deliver the best and most sustainable community benefits in the face of multiple challenges. In the process, the project team reimagined and transformed a previously unattractive and restrictive rail corridor into open and connected community space that everybody can appreciate.

As Mike Jenkins says, “The project outcomes show how much we can deliver in the way of major transport infrastructure projects.

 

“Without our entire project team’s hard work and dedication we’d never have achieved successful collaborations, nor created the sustainability outcomes that generations of future families will now enjoy.”

 

All nine level crossings were removed mid-2018 and the project achieved practical completion in October the same year.
