Twice recognised as a Top 50 LinkedIn Recruiter, Daniel is passionate about identifying individuals with a great attitude, passion and a healthy appetite for career growth in our firm as we strive to become the number one engineering consultancy in ANZ.
He says, “It’s been an amazing journey. When I started, we had only 500 people in Australia and to see us now with more than 3,000 people; it’s quite incredible!
“With a unified brand, new offices and a genuine transformation in our culture, WSP is a great place to work and that is increasingly being recognised in the market.”
As the Talent Lead for our Property, Resources, Environment and Digital business units, Daniel is enjoying the challenges of finding and hiring talented professionals that will not only align to our culture but also help design our thriving communities of the future.
“This is what excites me about working in the professional services industry,” adds Daniel. “The firm has set robust goals for the 2019-2021 strategic period and helping to influence those is driving me to succeed.”
With diversity being a topic hot on the lips of many firms within the STEM industry, Daniel says, “The issue surrounding gender balance is complex. In recruitment, this is largely about the size of the talent pool.
“There is a shortage of women in the industry and with everyone fighting to increase female representation in the workforce, salary competition is also a big consideration. Then, there is still the need to push awareness and education amongst all employees as to the benefits of gender balance which have been well documented.”
The good news is, there are a number of initiatives that Daniel is helping to implement. These include:
- Coaching hiring managers to promote flexibility – Can the role be part-time?
- Adopting gender neutral language
- Ensuring we have balanced interview panels to help remove sub-conscious bias
- Implementing sponsorships and STEM initiatives at high schools and universities
- Providing support to our minority groups. This includes our RAP committee, VIBE group and our Diversity and Inclusion Council.
Daniel acknowledges that progress is possible and that it is not as quick as we want it. He says, “Three years ago we had roughly 27 per cent female representation and now we are over 30 per cent. If we want to become leaders in diversity, we need to celebrate our achievements but also recognise the need to keep pushing for progress.”
To manage his work-life balance Daniel likes to remain active. He is a keen cyclist and enjoys keeping fit.
