Lighting the Way for Our Nation's Brightest Minds

Our work on The Hanna Neumann building at the Australian National University (ANU) has been recognised with a Commendation at the recent 2019 NSW/ACT Lighting Design Awards.

Our work on The Hanna Neumann building at the Australian National University (ANU) has been recognised with a Commendation at the recent 2019 NSW/ACT Lighting Design Awards.

 

Presented by the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IESANZ), the awards celebrate originality and ingenuity in lighting and luminaire design.

 

Our Canberra-based Specialist Lighting team comprised of Anthony Linard, Associate Lighting Designer, and Rachel Thomson, Architectural Lighting Designer worked on the lighting and lighting controls for the building, which is the university’s new research and teaching hub for the Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences Institute.

 

Lighting is an element of major importance to this project. It is a multi-faceted tool, providing not only functional illumination but also an important aesthetic element of the overall design and a long-term asset to the building.

WSP worked with architects Clarke Keller and DWP and we were contracted to provide services design for all services in the building.

 

According to our designers, ANU sought innovative, high quality lighting to showcase the university as a world-class institution.

 

In response to the architectural form, materials and colour, our lighting design provides a high quality, comfortable ambiance using indirect lighting and wall-washing. The addition of points of interest for occupants using decorative luminaires, focal light and assorted interesting details – add to the overall experience.

According to Anthony and Rachel, ANU was keenly aware that lighting quality and the pursuit of energy-efficient design are not mutually exclusive. This awareness allowed our lighting design team to employ best practice design techniques to create a high-quality indoor environment while minimising energy usage.

 

Anthony said, “The lighting, designed in close collaboration with the architecture and interior design team, supports the building's form and material palette while providing an exceptionally comfortable and engaging space for staff and students.
