The city shaping project is a key part of the NSW Government’s $650 program to revitalise Newcastle, providing a frequent and reliable travel option throughout the city centre and connecting key precincts in the region. It also allows for future possible expansion of the network in the Hunter region.
Newcastle Light Rail was recognised for its approach to design innovation, management of on-site design and integration as well as quality management.
At the award ceremony, Scott Ney, WSP’s Project Director for Newcastle Light Rail talked about the project’s innovative design and how this shaped the approach taken, “This was Australia’s first wire-free light rail which was built in on a route of cultural and historical significance. . This challenged us to find new ways to manage and visualise design.
“From the beginning we ensured that the team had a good working relationship. Together, we found new ways to apply technical expertise and technology.
“One of the ways we did this was using digital datasets and visualisations to aid communication and understanding of project constraints.
“We received good feedback from the client and the outcome was creation of a network and a space for the people of Newcastle that is connected to new social, employment and lifestyle opportunities.”
