The event welcomes a strong line-up of international and local speakers including some of WSP’s technical leaders who will discuss complex challenges on some of our major projects and the technical solutions used to overcome these.
WSP’s Stewart Garden, Technical Executive, will discuss the structural engineering challenges for designing major underground road and rail transport infrastructure. Written collaboratively with Peter Statton, Technical Executive, this paper touches on both authors’ experiences and how unique technical solutions have shaped some significant projects in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Peter Statton’s thoughts will also be shared from his joint paper with Mike Fordyce and Peter Ho from IStructE in Thursday’s session on how we can share lessons from past failures.
Nell Hardy, Senior Structural Engineer, has worked on a number of major projects in New South Wales including the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway Upgrade and WestConnex Rozelle Interchange. Presenting with Victor Andrade, Associate Principal at ARUP, they will touch on the complex design of the newly opened Northern Road Bridge over the M4 Interchange.
Senior Structural Engineer, Yasuto Nakamura will be co-presenting with Larry Yang, Structural Engineer at Jacobs, on a Fibre Reinforced Polymers retrofit repair system for a main road bridge culvert. Yasuto has a wealth of knowledge and experience working on complex structures with a large focus on the performance and strengthening of structures.
Joining from the United States, Roger Haight, the leader of WSP’s long-span bridge group, will present on the raising of Bayonne Bridge. Since 1931 the bridge has served as a key link between Statten Island, New York and Bayonne, New Jersey. To accommodate the vessels travelling to the harbour entrance while preserving the historic bridge, a solution was found to raise the bridge by 20m.

The conference kicks off tomorrow Wednesday 11 November 2020 running till Friday 13 November 2020. It is made up of a series of virtual presentations focusing on the five themes, Transport Infrastructure, Buildings, Energy, Forensic and Research and Engineering 4.0.
