The ENR 8th Global Best Projects Awards program focuses on recognising all aspects of projects including the challenges, risks and rewards of design and construction. A record number of entries were submitted this year, and TSRC was one of 30 winning projects located across 21 countries.
The TSRC project ticked all aspects of the award criteria including safety, performance, innovation as well as design and construction quality.
Providing a striking gateway into the Toowoomba region, the TSRC, which was fully inaugurated in September 2019, is the largest commonwealth government commitment to a single road project in Queensland history. This historic infrastructure project was designed to help manage increased traffic volumes that put pressure on the highway network passing through Toowoomba and over the Great Dividing Range. Overall, the TSRC has increased freight efficiency and significantly improved driver safety and community amenity by avoiding 18 sets of traffic lights and removing heavy vehicles from Toowoomba’s Central Business District (CBD).
A key aspect included a cutting about 30m deep atop the range to allow all heavy vehicles, including dangerous goods carriers and over-dimensional vehicles, to safely use the new road. The cutting included a viaduct 800m long and 50m high, built over an existing rail line.

The TSRC delivers real benefits to the region, improving community amenity, safety and functionality with a lower number of heavy vehicles and less traffic through central Toowoomba’s urban arterial roads.
“Working collaboratively with our global networks, engaging with teams from Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines, has definitely merited us this global commendation and we hope we can continue bringing such innovative and best practice projects to life.”
