In this role, Sam will lead a diverse and highly skilled group of rail experts across Australia. She brings more than 18 years of experience to the position, and has spent the last two years as the NSW Rail Executive. Prior to this, she led the Technical Advisory packages for Sydney Metro City & Southwest and Sydney Metro West.
Sam is a prominent figure in the rail industry, leading the charge in embedding design principles that champion the experience of end-users. She is also WSP’s Project Director for Fast Rail.
In a time where the world is rapidly changing, Sam is certain about one thing – that this is a tremendous opportunity to drive lasting transformation in rail. She says, “I am passionate about people, diversity and solving old problems in new ways to leave a legacy for our industry.”
Sam first began her career as a geotechnical engineer, joining WSP in 2004. Since then she has cemented her status as a trusted advisor to many of our clients, particularly in rail, becoming skilled at metro and underground station delivery in Australia and South East Asia. Along with Sydney Metro, Sam has had the opportunity to work on a range of city-shaping transport projects such as the City Relief Line Western Express Program and CBD Rail Capacity Expansion Program in NSW and the South Island Line East Project in Hong Kong.
Sam’s appointment follows the recruitment of Katharina Gertsmann as Manager – Rail Group Capability and Quality for the firm. Meanwhile, Mike Jenkins, WSP’s former Australian Lead for Rail has taken on the role of Director, Rail Projects, which sees him focus on the delivery of complex rail projects across the country.
Charlie Jewkes, WSP’s Director of Transport in Australia welcomed Sam to the senior transport leadership team, saying, “I am thrilled Sam is our new National Executive, Rail.
“I look forward to working closely with her, together with Mike, Katharina and our talented team of Regional and Team Rail Executives to put a stronger foot forward in the market.
“Together they will focus on delivering robust future-ready rail solutions that keep our communities thriving, while also ensuring we provide an exceptional experience for our Rail clients.”
Sam commenced her new role on 13 July 2020, based in Sydney.
