In alignment with our commitment to ESG through WSP with HEART, organiser Margie Jones, Performance Commercial Executive in our Transport team says, “Children frequently arrive at school without the food they need to fuel their growing bodies and brains. Missing out on lunch has a big impact on children, with hunger causing fatigue and poor concentration. This commonly leads to learning difficulties and behavioral problems in school, with disadvantaged children falling further behind their peers. Many children come from homes experiencing financial hardship, substance abuse, violence, homelessness or are refugees.
“For 90 minutes, an army of WSP Brisbane volunteers, made and wrapped sandwiches, which will be delivered to participating schools. They will be given to children who have nothing else to eat.”
The special part of Eat Up's approach is engaging communities, schools and corporate groups such as us to help prepare over 11,000 sandwiches each week. Once sandwiches are prepared, Eat Up delivers them fresh to over 500 schools, along with healthy snacks. Schools then freeze the sandwiches, and toast them daily as needed.
“A big thanks to everyone involved – we made a huge amount of sandwiches in a small amount of time and got to know each other better in the process,” concludes Margie. “And, thanks to WSP for a firm-wide contribution of $1,000 to further assist Eat Up.
“We’re looking forward to doing this again, as it was such a great success.”
