Arun says, “I’m very excited to join the team and utilise my extensive experience to lead, develop and direct strategic plans for the growth for WSP’s Transmission Lines business across the ANZ region.
Equipped with more than 30 years of transmission lines experience from concept designs to the detailed delivery stage, Arun’s focus is the delivery of major transmission lines projects in Australia and New Zealand.
About the market
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has recently published its Integrated System Plan (ISP). The ISP is intended to provide an actionable 20-year roadmap for Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) to address the structural changes occurring in the energy sector.
As AEMO becomes increasingly proactive in system operations and planning, it has consulted broadly and sought to devise a coherent plan. In doing so, it should be credited with formulating a pathway for a renewables transition and an agenda to assist more of the industry to pull in the same direction. The ISP identifies 18 network investments that will need to be made as part of AEMO’s optimal development path, to fulfil NEM expectations of cost, security and reliability through the complex energy sector transition.
Given the large scope of opportunities in this space, it is of importance for WSP to develop capabilities in transmission line design and delivery. With this goal in mind, the firm is excited to have Arun on board.
He says, “There are major transmission line opportunities in the AEMO ISP, the REZ Development plans of the Australian states, and business-as-usual refurbishments of existing assets. In the next 10-20 years, there will be exponential growth with mega projects in the transmission line space.
“The existing transmission line assets are ageing and nearing the replacement criteria, and utilities have large investment plans on major capex and opex projects. There are many opportunities to uprate or upgrade the existing lines and connect to the new assets being built. Movement towards private ownership of utilities opens up further opportunities as these businesses expand into unregulated asset development.
Arun concludes, “With large opportunities in the ANZ market in the transmission line business, WSP is well positioned to help our clients develop major projects.”
