WSP has over 130 years of experience in transport tunnels, spanning a range of industry sectors including Roads, Rail and Transit, and Aviation.
Working as a collaborative team, we provide comprehensive services across every aspect of tunnel and underground construction projects, including ground investigation, tunnel design, ground improvement, initial and final support, instrumentation and monitoring, tunnel systems, and ventilation/fire life safety aspects. This extends to all phases of the project, providing condition assessment, rehabilitation, re-purposing and upgrading of tunnels and underground transportation facilties.
We employ experts across all aspects of tunneling practice, drawing on our international network of specialists as required to find the best fit for projects across various ground conditions – whether soft ground and soils, hard rock, or mixed-face – in big cities, active seismic areas, mountain passes, and under bodies of water.
To manage impacts and risks associated with tunneling in challenging environments, we leverage the latest technology such as numerical modelling of ground/structure interaction as well as BIM and Virtual Design Construction.
Our local expertise is backed by our extensive global experience, dating back to 1904 with the construction of the first segment of the New York Subway system. Drawing upon this extensive experience, we have worked with clients across Australia and New Zealand to:
- Design the iconic Airport Link project in Brisbane, which included the largest precast steel fibre reinforced concrete tunnel lining and three of the largest road caverns to be constructed on a project
- Design Auckland’s longest road tunnel, Waterview Connection, which involved tunnelling through volcanic rock, creating one of the world’s most technically complex turnings of a tunnel-boring machine to date
- Work with the CYP Design and Construction Joint Venture to deliver the Metro Tunnel Project in Melbourne, providing a unique trinocular tunnel solution resulting in spacious station caverns in the CBD and wide underground metro platforms
- Providedirection as tunnelling Technical Advisors for the Forrestfield-Airport Link in Perth, enabling the project to tunnel beneath Perth Airport without disrupting its operations for the duration of the project
