What is the purpose of Pride Employee Resource Groups at WSP?

“The purpose of these groups is to feel supported, to be able to feel that you can talk to someone who understands what you may be going through and feel comfortable to talk about your sexual preferences, without the fear of discrimination.”

Belonging is rooted in feelings, and everyone needs to feel valued and celebrated for who they are.

In your opinion, what’s the most important reason to celebrate Pride? 

“Pride signifies a monumental snapshot in history where LGBTQIA+ individuals are celebrated, and it showcases how far we have come. It's a moment to honour the work of those who led the movement while also celebrating the work advocates have done to inspire the next generation. It's a reminder of the amazing rainbow journey, but it is also an important support system for those struggling in their coming out journey.

What stands out to you about Pride Employee Resource Groups at WSP?

“For LGBTQIA+ employees, Pride Employee Resource Groups can serve as a safety blanket for people who might feel marginalized, creating a community for everyone to thrive. For other coworkers, Pride Employee Resource Groups can promote the understanding and equity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Such groups can help people realize the prevalence of unconscious bias and how to avoid it.”

Why is it important for companies to commit to Pride initiatives?

“It’s important for companies to commit to Pride initiatives because it shows the genuine care and focus on the well-being, identity, and diversity of your employees. Upon joining WSP as part of the LGBTQIA+ community, it’s difficult to openly share your true, authentic self due to fears of judgement, rejection, and false assumptions. Celebrating Pride shows commitment to providing the inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ colleagues to thrive and feel at ease, but also provide the opportunity to educate all employees on its history and understanding its diverse communities today.”

What perspectives does your lived experience allow you to bring to work?

“Coming out at work was scary—not because there were any signs that I wouldn’t be accepted, but because it wasn’t clear that I would. I’m overjoyed that we have the VIBE Employee Resource Group (ERG), because it’s a sign that WSP embraces the LGBTQIA+ community. Pride ERGs foster a culture where employees feel safe bringing their true selves to work, by facilitating connections, building community, supporting individuality and self-expression, promoting allyship, and advocating for issues raised by LGBTQIA+ employees.”
