WSP Highways Project Manager Myriam Thomas worked in collaboration with the Fairfax Career Adviser to bring together WSP and the Fairfax Physics Department.
On November 9 Myriam alongside Jonathon Dickson (bridges team) and Mr Hill from Fairfax launched the bridge designing competition to pupils from years 7-12.
Competition participants will have until December 18 to produce their very own bridge designs using free software called Bridge Designer.
The idea of the competition was suggested by WSP Senior Technician in the bridges team Mark Stinton who has experience of using the Bridge Designer software at university.
Myriam Thomas, Highways Project Manager said: “We were delighted with the number of students who signed up for the competition and the enthusiasm from the school to help us promote our industry. We believe this is a fantastic and exciting industry to work in and want to encourage any young people who might be interested in becoming a civil engineer.
“Our hope is to expand this competition to other schools to increase awareness of what civil and bridge engineering are”.
Pauline Knowles Careers Adviser at Fairfax said: “We are really happy at the up take from our students – especially the number of girls. It’s an amazing opportunity to work alongside a company such as WSP.
“Over the years they have been very supportive of the school offering their time to attend career events as well as opening their offices for work experience. We are thrilled that we are the pilot school for this competition”
The winner of the competition at Fairfax School will be announced in January 18 following judging from Mark Stinton, Myriam Thomas and Jonathon Dickson.
