The scheme plans to create a new low-carbon, heat and power supply infrastructure using energy produced by burning non-recyclable waste, and it will also cut energy bills for the connected public and commercial buildings.
WSP’s specialist district energy networks team – Energy Solutions - carried out a year-long detailed feasibility study which involved heat mapping and energy master planning across the city, assessing environmental and waste heat sources for areas including Cardiff Bay, the River Taff, waste water treatment works and the Viridor Energy Recovery Facility.
WSP’s analysis has shown that the preferred scheme utilising heat from Trident Park could save up to 5,600 tonnes of carbon each year and reduce energy costs by five per cent for every building that would be connected to the new network
The Cabinet at Cardiff Council has now given their support to the proposed heating scheme which will allow further work to be carried to create a full business case. This full business case will help inform any decisions to approve or reject the heating scheme.
WSP Project Manager Digby Morrison said: “WSP are pleased that our work will help to enable the Welsh Government’s ambitions for the public sector to become carbon neutral by 2030.
“The heat generated from the proposed waste processing facility would not only support nearly 90% of the demand from connected buildings; it will reduce energy costs and make crucial carbon savings.”
