With the deadline fast approaching for London boroughs to submit bids to Transport for London for projects funded through the Mayor’s Air Quality Funding programme, low emission neighbourhoods are one of the many types of schemes that London boroughs will be looking to take forward.
Consultancy WSP will undertake a feasibility study for the introduction of low emission streets within Hammersmith to reduce the number of vehicles overall and to incentivise the uptake of ultra-low emission vehicles. The work involves developing options for different types of access restrictions and operational periods which can be applied for the selected low emission streets as well as identifying the benefits.
This will extend upon WSP’s ‘Future Ready’ work of improving air quality in London after having completed 50 audits over the last year as part of the Mayor's School Air Quality Audit Programme, as well as work on other low emission street schemes for the City of London and Westminster’s low emission neighbourhood.
As of this month, London boroughs have already introduced ultra-low emission streets which ban all but the cleanest vehicles from 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm on weekdays. This includes the WSP supported scheme in Shoreditch, Hackney which launched on 3rd September and is one of many measures being introduced as part of the City Fringe Low Emission Neighbourhood.

WSP has also recently begun work on the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham’s ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) last-mile freight hub scheme, which aims to reduce the number of vehicles in Hammersmith Town Centre and encourage the uptake ULEVs.
