The ground risk and remediation team at WSP will de-risk the brownfield site that was once a thriving Meat Market in Glasgow, by undertaking remediation measures, that incorporate cost effective and sustainable solutions to support Glasgow City Councils programme of introducing essential infrastructure for new developments on the site.
The Meat Market site lies within the Collegelands, Calton and Barras Glasgow City Region City Deal project. The project aims to unlock the area’s development potential and enable the continuation of economic activity from the City Centre to the East End and the progression of the existing Calton Barras Action Plan by improving infrastructure, quality of land and travel connections supported by £27m investment.
A fundamental vision for the site development is to support the local community, with the potential to offer community activities and to create a nurturing environment for local residents and businesses.
Project Manager, Stewart Browne says, “We are delighted to continue our involvement in working at this site in partnership with GCC. Though not without its challenges, we look forward to using our skills and expertise to overcome such challenges through additional site investigation and remediation.”
Additional site investigations are now being carried out with the remediation plans scheduled for later this year and infrastructure works to be completed in 2019.
WSP’s previous work of a similar nature with GCC includes geo-environmental and mineral assessments followed by remedial options appraisal and remediation strategy documentation for a portfolio of ten brownfield sites.
