WSP provided consultancy on building services design, vertical transportation, acoustics and fire engineering for the 20,000m² building, which meant the collaboration of several disciplines across our Bristol and Birmingham offices.
The building services include a number of innovative technologies to save water and energy. The air conditioning uses the cooling potential of the dock water in the adjacent harbour, approved by the Environment Agency following WSP’s extensive modelling of the water flows and temperatures. With a capacity of 3.2MW, it is the largest system of this kind in Bristol. The chillers are fitted with magnetic levitation compressors to achieve energy efficiencies 50% better than conventional models, and the power consumed by the fan coil units is significantly reduced by the installation of low-energy motors. Rainwater is collected from the roof to flush the toilets, and the low-energy lighting is fitted with daylight sensors throughout the building.
Bristol waterfront’s new landmark building achieved a BREEAM rating of Excellent, and was recognised as the Best Commercial Workplace at the British Council for Offices regional awards.
