The number of passengers flying between destinations is growing strongly, so is the number of flights all around the globe. This puts more and more pressure on the hub that connects everything together: the airport.
Demands for parking lots and better transit systems increase, terminal operations need to be more efficient, larger facilities are required to house bigger aircraft, and advanced technological systems are expected in baggage handling, check-in and passenger data gathering.
Airports are evaluating existing infrastructure and determining the need for rehabilitation, upgrade or new construction.
Putting WSP’s airport buildings experience to work for you
We have experience with all types of airport buildings and their interfaces with the civil works. We optimise the building shape and form to create the best environment for the passengers and the staff in order to keep these mini cities running smoothly and efficiently. Examples include:
- Passenger terminal buildings and satellite piers
- Transport interchanges
- Control towers
- Cargo buildings
- Hangars
- Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Facilities (MRO)
- Fire and rescue stations
- Administrative buildings
- Parking garages
- Consolidated rental-car facilities
- Storage facilities
- Hotels
We have worked on many exciting projects around the world. In the UK, London Heathrow Airport Terminal 2B is one of the largest privately funded construction projects. WSP successfully met the challenge of respecting stringent regulations and standards developed over many years by the client, to meet resilience, security and maintenance requirements while providing a best-in-class passenger experience fit for the future.
We also had the privilege of working on Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, North America’s first airport PPP project. The terminal development programme at the airport was the principal component of the airport’s CA$4.4 billion airport development programme. In coordination with the Airport Authority, a staging plan was developed to build a new terminal facility while ensuring that airport airside and landside traffic was maintained. This included an interim infield terminal hold facility and new cargo facilities to replace existing cargo and terminal buildings destined for demolition to make room for the new terminal. In spite of the complications of building a new facility on the footprint of the existing facilities while maintaining airport operations for the travelling public, the programme was completed on an accelerated schedule and within budget.

Focusing on sustainability
Over the years, there has been a rise in environmental awareness and airports are now working together to reduce - and ultimately eliminate - their carbon footprint. The objective is clear: the aviation industry is required to cut 50 per cent of its net carbon emissions by 2050, compared with 2005 levels.
WSP is a leader in this field. We are at the heart of creating and administrating the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme launched by the ACI Europe, and have certified to date more than 200 airports around the world, welcoming 41.2 percent of global air traffic annually that’s 3.1bn passengers.
If you are contemplating new infrastructure construction or improving existing ones, we have the expertise and experience to develop the best solution to meet your requirements while respecting the industry’s demand for safety and efficiency into the future.
