In Singapore, one of the world's most densely populated islands, land is scarce. During the planning of the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit's (MRT) North-East Line Extension, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) sought assistance in a major undertaking—building the flagship station underneath one of the busiest roads in the heart of the country’s commercial and shopping district.

Continuing our long history of service to the Singapore LTA, we served as lead design consultant on the construction of Singapore MRT's Dhoby Ghaut Station. We also performed design consultant services for the ten-and six-story commercial developments at the station.

The team addressed several key issues, which included excavation of the five-level underground station connections to the existing subway line, accommodating the large drainage canal that bisected the station, and enabling the station to support the two commercial buildings. Among the team’s major technical achievements was the development of methods to temporarily divert the canal during excavation.

Dhoby Ghaut Station was completed in April 2003 within budget and on schedule. Today, the station provides a convenient, central interchange between the MRT's North-South and East-West routes. Each day, an estimated 20,000 commuters use the facility every hour during peak times.
