The new medical complex added 1,090 beds and ancillary facilities including a student center, auditorium, chapel, library, offices and recreational space to one of South Korea’s most prestigious hospitals.
We provided design management and construction management services for the new complex, which comprises 2 million square feet (191,000 square meters). We were responsible for overall design review, including mechanical/electrical systems, hospital layout plans and interface with existing facilities. The firm also developed the master schedule and directed bidding and contractor selection, and provided value engineering, alternatives analysis and cost engineering.
The new complex will allow Catholic Medical Center, already a leader in cancer and stem cell research, to offer specialized diagnosis and treatment, and double the number of patients it serves. Completed in December 2008, the complex offers centers for cancer treatment, organ transplant, cell therapy, cardiovascular services and eye care. It includes high-tech digital systems that facilitate electronic storage and rapid access to medical records and images, making ordering tests and other reports significantly more efficient. An emergency gas turbine generator that can produce electricity during normal operations as well as during power outages will reduce the hospital’s electricity costs.
