The ASHRAE Technology Awards recognises outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design in the areas of occupant comfort, indoor air quality and energy conservation.

Commissioned by The Hong Kong Jockey Club (“HKJC”), WSP was in-charged with the design of a water-cooled District Cooling System (“DCS”) to replace the aged and low efficiency air-cooled chillers for their Stable Compounds at Sha Tin Racecourse.  The project consisted of two phases: Phase I include the installation of two nos. 1,000 RT and two nos. 500 RT water-cooled chillers for over 16 nos. stables; Phase II involved the installation of another 1,000RT water-cooled chillers, which aimed to extend the coverage of the DCS to serve Sha Tin Central Complex, Apprentice Jockey Quarters and Central Store. The project was finished by adding two 350 kW heat pumps to produce hot water for dehumidification for the equine hospital and the laboratory and to replace those not-energy efficient electric heaters.

Working as the Lead Consultant and Building Services Consultant of this project, WSP’s scope of woks included feasibility studies, detailed design and project management, loading estimations, plant configuration, opimisation, chilled water network planning.  What is more, the completion of the project also marked the success in reducing the annual energy saving consumption of Sha Tin Stable Compound and its surrounding buildings by over 50% as compared with the baseline conditions.

Delighted with the winning, Colin says, “We are very pleased to be among the Honourable Mentions winners of the 2020 ASHRAE Technology Awards. The installation is actually part of the ongoing Racecourse Master Plan, in which HKJC has committed to invest on building management systems so as to optimise efficiency in the long run. We incorporated ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and IAQ while designing the DCS,” and “its performance was already proven through one year’s actual, verifiable operating data”, Michael added, “high energy-efficiency and environmental sustainability have been today’s top priorities, even prerequisites for us when it comes to building and system designs, however, they are also the biggest challenges that we face. That is is why we have Future Ready programme at WSP – we bring the current and future societal, environmental, resource and technology issues, we find solutions and we work closely with our clients to tackle them.”
