This webinar explores the new Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 18: Cycling Facilities, the primary cycling design resource used by municipalities throughout Ontario. Since the first edition was published in 2014, design of cycling facilities has quickly evolved. Many of the traditional cycling facilities in the original manual only appeal to people who are already comfortable riding in traffic. There’s been an increasing recognition of the need to provide high quality, physically separated facilities and enhanced intersection design treatments that appeal to all ages and abilities, protect vulnerable road users, and align with complete streets goals.
We will present the exciting changes that are in the New 2021 Edition of the Bikeway Design Guidelines for the Province of Ontario, including some hot topics and emerging design solutions. The manual will be transformative, just as the original Book 18 was, providing practitioners with the information and design guidance they need to plan and implement cycling networks and infrastructure that is informed by the most current research and lessons learned from across North America and abroad. The presentation will also include photos of recently implemented cycling infrastructure by Ontario municipalities that are leading the way in building connected cycling networks.
