Accessibility testing of an autonomous bus in Espoo, Finland

The City of Espoo is planning to use autonomous public transport as part of a low-carbon mobility. Autonomous bus technology is evolving at a rapid pace, but much remains to be developed in terms of usability and functionality. We studied the accessibility of robot driven buses in the fall of 2021 by using a virtual model. During the virtual robot bus trip, the people in the target groups were interviewed in depth.

The testing helped us understand what are the issues that need to be taken into account in robotic bus operations to serve all the citizens of the city.

Our goal is that autonomous public transport would improve access to the rail network in Espoo. This would enable the travel chain to be low-emission and more pleasant to use.
