#BalanceforBetter is this year’s International Women's Day (IWD) campaign theme. The day also marks a call to action to raise awareness about gender balance.
Today, we ask Ivy Kong, Managing Director, Asia on what gender balance means to her and also about any advice she has for young people starting their careers.
What does gender balance mean to you?
For me, gender balance is about removing barriers and changing people’s mindsets so that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential - regardless of their gender. It is not about favouring a particular gender, but rather it is about understanding and accepting that people are different and these differences help to enrich an organisation and its people.
What is one thing we can all do to support gender balance at WSP?
Stay true to our culture and be proud to be part of a company where gender diversity and inclusion is embraced and valued. I believe that everyone has a talent and we should support a work environment that facilitates the career development of our people and attract those who share similar values to join us.
In 5 years where will you be?
I haven’t really thought about this. But what is certain is that, I will continue to do my best and use my experience, skills and talents to make a positive impact on our people and the projects we undertake.
What advice would you give to young people starting their career?
Be proactive, keep your passion, overcome your weaknesses and build on your strengths to create opportunities for yourself to excel. Stay relevant, keep learning from those around you and seek opportunities to collaborate with others. Be professional and uphold the highest ethical values at all times and always have confidence in your own abilities.
What is success for you?
Success to me is to know your mission, commit to it and being able to inspire others to achieve their aspirations.
