It was the first harbor crossing in Hong Kong, and continues to be the busiest of the three road tunnel crossings, linking Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Over 130,000 vehicles use the tunnel every day. In 1999, the Highways Department commissioned WSP to undertake a condition survey to identify any necessary repairs and improvements to meet current engineering standards and statutory requirements, and to prepare maintenance procedures to ensure the quality of future inspection and routine maintenance of the tunnel. WSP’s scope of work was all-encompassing, and included all civil and structural elements, tunnel ventilation, power supply, fire protection, traffic control and surveillance, toll collection, and building services systems.
Under a separate contract, WSP was commissioned by the Civil Engineering Department to conduct a detailed survey and assessment of the immersed tube tunnel’s concrete lining.
