Construction Begins on Maryland’s Purple Line

Construction has begun on Maryland’s Purple Line, a light rail transit line that will run inside the Capital Beltway north of Washington, D.C.

The Purple Line will provide commuters with faster, more direct and more reliable east-west transit service.

Construction of the Purple Line began immediately following a groundbreaking ceremony held in Hyattsville, Maryland, which included (from left to right) Purple Line Project Director Bill Parks, Deputy Project Director Mike Madden, TDD Executive Director Chuck Lattuca, Administrator Kevin Quinn, TDD Chief of Staff Jeff Ensor, Deputy Director for Administration Stuart Wilkins, and Director of Property Acquisition Judy Freedman Beckon.

The east-west Purple Line will connect with the Washington D.C. Metrorail, Maryland’s commuter rail system, Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, and several local bus services.
