Shinsegae International was recognized as a Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia Finalist in the CTBUH 2016 Best Tall Building Awards. WSP provided MEP design for the iconic headquarters building constructed for Shinsegae International in Seoul’s popular Gangnam District. Since being completed, the 15-story structure has won international awards for its innovation and breath-taking design, which was led by famed American architect Olson Kundig.
The 15,644m2 building includes staff offices and meeting spaces, design studios, a rooftop garden and sculpture park, and ground-level retail and restaurants spaces that face onto a public plaza. Designed to meet Korea’s rigorous energy codes the building contains a number of unique elements such as pivoting 10.6m external panels at the base of the structure that modulate daylight to reduce heat gain while optimizing thermal comfort and maximizing natural daylight year-round.
The awards ceremony was held on 3 November 2016 at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA. by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) to recognize projects and individuals that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level.
