The Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Building Awards presented by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) showcase and celebrate the achievements of businesses and innovators which are leading the way on sustainability in buildings in the Asia Pacific Region. This year, the THEi Chai Wan Campus project is the only winning project from Hong Kong, clinching the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award in Institution category.
In collaboration with Ronald Lu & Partners, WSP’s comprehensive MEP solutions and sustainable design strategies support THEi’s vision of creating an open, community-centric learning environment. Apart from achieving greater than 25% of energy reduction through features such energy-efficient air conditioning system, lightings and other active systems, the project embraces lots of outdoor public green spaces which account for about 40% of the site greenery coverage. The greenery’s configurations, locations and species choices were informed by solar irradiance studies of the built forms and other studies of the site and surroundings.
The campus also enjoys a high permeability of natural light and air through a number of dedicated features including a twin-block design, north-south building orientation, high building permeability, a cross-ventilated layout, external shading and light shelves and a smart facade design.
To realise a Future Ready campus, we allow flexibility for change and future expansion to meet future teaching and learning mode. The master planning and building design are optimised for possible alterations, including the structural grid, foundation loadings and architectural layout.
The campus has attained Final Platinum rating under the local BEAM Plus green building assessment scheme. It has also won at the Green Building Award 2019 and hence being nominated to contest for this renowned regional Award.
