This Snack & Learn webinar talks about the Helderfontein Pedestrian Bridge, a bowed arch truss bridge spanning over the Jukskei River in Johannesburg, South Africa. This bridge connects a residential estate with a school opposite the river and significantly reduces travel time for parents and children.
The bridge was designed to withstand high flood forces from the rapid flowing river. It is dowelled extensively into the granite rock below utilizing dowel bars and chemical anchors. The bridge is designed to allow for pedestrians as well as golf carts. The bridge deck is chemically anchored into the substructure with slotted holes to sustain flood forces as well as allow for thermal expansion and contraction.
