A Community Partner Providing Improved Healthcare Access

Slated to open in March 2021, this new 600,000 square foot acute care hospital facility and 60,000 square foot ambulatory care center were designed to provide improved access for the residents of Prince George’s County in Largo, Maryland. Both facilities are targeting LEED Silver certification.

The medical center, in partnership with the University of Maryland Medical System, will also assist in recruiting physicians of many specialties to the region to provide high quality, clinically advanced medical care.

Providing High Quality Care to Underserved Residents

The new facility will help meet the underserved needs of local residents by providing state-of-the-art trauma care, critical care, surgical care and emergency medicine services. This new facility will replace the 75-year-old Prince George’s Hospital Center, addressing the continuing need to provide state-of-the-art medical care to residents, to accommodate existing volumes, and changes in care delivery.

The facility, designed by Wilmot Sanz Architects, provides 205 acute care licensed beds, 45 ER treatment bays, eight operating rooms, and two roof-top helipads. Additional inpatient services include an observation unit, trauma department, pre- and post-op care, intensive care unit, intermediate care unit, inpatient medical/surgical care, behavioral health unit, 15-bed specialty pediatric unit, women’s services, mother and baby program, neo-natal intensive care unit and an academic residency program.

The 60,000 square-foot, three-story ambulatory care center includes a two-level cancer center with radiation oncology and medical oncology, a perinatal diagnostic center, outpatient clinics, an outpatient lab, and a cardiac rehabilitation center.

Cost Savings and Efficiencies Through Prefabrication

Our team completed the mechanical and electrical engineering design for the new hospital and central energy plant. During the design process, our team worked with the architect, owner and trade partners to identify systems suitable for prefabrication based on the specific needs of the project. Prefabrication of the central energy plant during construction proved to be efficient and effective, resulting in better quality mechanical and electrical systems. Prefabrication also allowed for the plant to be installed and operational approximately one year prior to substantial completion.
