Marine Engine Test Facility

MAN Energy Solutions is embarking on a project to demonstrate at full scale a large marine engine running on different kinds of fuel to supplement diesel and reduce its consumption. Construction is nearing completion at MAN Energy Solutions test facility, Research centre Copenhagen (RCC), of a new research and development centre specially built for the new test engine.

WSP Denmark is responsible for the multidisciplinary design, construction management and quality assurance of the new test facility, including all the building’s technical installations and utilities. We worked in partnership with Danish engineering consultants ISC, who are responsible for the engine installation.  

Located on the harbourside, the building has extremely deep, water-tight foundations under a large steel construction of considerable complexity. Some of its systems have more in common with those of a ship than a building. For example, like its predecessor the engine is cooled by seawater, and WSP is currently seeking permissions to also use seawater for comfort cooling.  

WSP is also providing technical input for the environmental applications, not only for the test facility but for all buildings on the site, including an academy and a warehouse.  

Testing will begin shortly in the new R&D facility, furthering MAN Energy Solutions’ ambitions to develop commercially viable engines using zero-carbon fuel alternatives as part of its commitment to the decarbonization of the global marine market.
