In this month’s issue of Big Project ME, WSP Middle East’s Managing Director – Transport & Infrastructure, Dr Mohamed Nazier discussed how sustainability management in the infrastructure domain can bridge gaps between public sector climate objectives, supply chain behaviours, and desired circular outcomes.
In his article, Dr Nazier made a compelling case for ingraining sustainability within the value management of infrastructure projects as a means of encouraging and rewarding the right behaviours throughout the various strata of the supply chain. He said, “Project owners and practitioners have the opportunity to use sustainability not only to minimize environmental damage but also to realize short-term fiscal savings and long-term value in infrastructure projects. By finding ways to share the cost savings, resulting from recycling and other sustainability initiatives, with designers, contractors, and suppliers, project owners can ensure that their objectives are cascaded down to the main parties in their supply chains.”
He also emphasised the role of sustainability certification and award schemes in promoting best practices and raising awareness of the importance of sustainability within the supply chain. In addition, he called for more active engagement of younger generations in decision-making. “Younger generations are known for their natural inclination to adopt sustainable practices. Engaging the brightest of this young pool ensures the continuity of sustainability plans and efforts and enables the utilization of digital for the design, delivery, and management of more sustainable assets,” Dr Nazier said.
