Geely and Volvo Cars Manufacturing Plant

In November 2016, Swedish carmaker, Volvo, and its Chinese parent, Geely, announced details of a new, jointly owned car production plant in Taizhou in eastern China. The plant, operated by Volvo, would, for the first time in mainland China, bring manufacturing of both Volvo and Geely cars under the same roof.

Appointed as the owner’s representative and programme manager, WSP China was responsible for programme control during the construction stage. Designed for a production capacity of around 200,000 vehicles per year, the 390,000m² factory is located on a site of 734,400m².

Together with the scale of the plant, its complexity presented significant challenges for our team tasked with ensuring the project was completed within the tight timescales of a very fast-track programme. A factory of this type would normally take 2 years to construct – this one was completed in 13 months. WSP developed a detailed programme with the client, tracked progress, advised on approaches for improvement and undertook day to day monitoring on site.

We are very proud of the role in ensuring the Geely & Volvo Manufacturing Plant was completed on time, and to have been involved in the delivery of a factory which is seen as a benchmark for Volvo’s facilities around the world.
