Who are you and what is your role?
I’m a Technical Director within our Building Services Team. I have a mechanical engineering background and currently I am MEP lead on some of WSP’s most iconic projects. In addition to my role as project lead (design and supervision) I am also a Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) technical reviewer and I commit some of my time to coaching and mentoring our young engineers.
What got you into engineering?
I studied mechanical engineering at university and got into the construction industry through my mentor who was based in London. I really enjoy everything about the industry, I’ve been privileged to have been involved in some landmark projects in the UK, Germany, UAE, Holland and Australia and have travelled to some beautiful countries as a result of this.
What is it you do outside of work that you feel most proud of?
My Friday mornings are spent at Church, I go to the gym at least 3 times a week and I do a lot of reading.
As a CIBSE interviewer and mentor I’m proud to say that everyone I’ve mentored/sponsored to date has become a member of CIBSE and/or a Chartered Engineer!
What do you think the future of engineering looks like?
I believe design will be technology driven with an emphasis on low energy systems to ensure ‘carbon neutral’ buildings/facilities.
What are your thoughts on Gender Balance & Diversity within the industry?
The purpose of engineering is to benefit society, and therefore I believe to achieve this effectively the industry must reflect the society it seeks to serve.
WSP’s approach to gender balance is commendable and it requires sustained efforts from all of us to ensure a successful outcome. This will go a long way to attract and retain the best female talent in the market. I’m pleased to say that I’ve sponsored three of our female colleagues to become Chartered Engineers.
