NAVFAC is the Naval Shore and Expeditionary Systems Command that plans, builds, and maintains sustainable facilities; delivers environmental, utilities and other base services; and acquires and manages expeditionary combat force systems and equipment.
“Being selected as the single-source provider by NAVFAC for this IDIQ is indicative of the capabilities HKS|WSP brings to the health care, science and technology and defense marketplace,” said Rick Rome, executive vice president at WSP and a member of the joint venture policy board. “With a broad national and international presence, we are able to bring the best experience from across our firms to service these projects for NAVFAC.”
“HKS and WSP are each best-in-class as architects and engineers. Combined, there is a significant multiplier effect. The success of the partnership is indicative of HKS and WSP’s strong working relationship over more than 35 years, including 42 health care projects in the last seven years, located in 33 cities and four countries,” said Jim Whitaker, principal and senior vice president at HKS, Inc. and a member of the joint venture policy board.
HKS|WSP is delivering on six recently awarded task orders, including feasibility/planning studies for buildings in Southern California; interior renovations at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia; and two new medical buildings.
The new buildings include an approximately 44,000-square-foot medical dental clinic at the Marine Corps Air Station in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and an approximately 478,000-square-foot research and laboratory addition to the medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Services, located within the historic Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. This roughly $280-million-dollar project will comprise approximately 120,000 square feet of laboratories, a bio-safety level (BSL) 3 laboratory and six radiology rooms, including MRIs.
The HKS|WSP joint venture will provide a wide range of services as part of the IDIQ contract with individual task orders, including program management, project management, quality control, architecture, medical and medical equipment planning, lab planning, interior design, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, mechanical-electrical-plumbing engineering, fire protection engineering, cost estimating, scheduling, LEED and sustainability consulting, AT/FP, communications, commissioning, landscape architecture, and construction administration services.
