WSP USA, a leading engineering and professional services consultancy, appoints Douglas Oliver mine water services leader.
Oliver will lead a group dedicated to providing solutions to the mining industry’s complex water projects, where mines must balance productivity and profitability while meeting strict environmental regulations, advancing safety and addressing community concerns. He previously served as area manager for the WSP mining hydrogeology group and oversaw the Tucson, Reno and Salt Lake City offices.
“I am excited about this opportunity that will allow me to engage with clients at mine sites throughout the region and abroad,” Oliver said. “WSP’s services provide for all phases of the mine project lifecycle from exploration and baseline surveys, through operations, and finally closure, reclamation and post closure.”
With over 25 years of experience, Oliver has served as project manager, technical lead and reviewer on a variety of projects for mining, industrial, federal and municipal clients. He has worked on planned and active mines (both underground and open pit), and legacy sites for commodities including copper, iron ore, gold, uranium, lithium and borates, in settings ranging from extreme desert environments to the arctic. He has evaluated data and developed conceptual models of hydrogeologic systems, and performed and overseen numerical groundwater modeling studies to assess impacts from mine dewatering, review tailings storage facility seepage, compare alternatives for remediation of contaminated sites, predict future impacts to water quality for planned mine facilities, and predict pore pressures for pit slope stability analysis.
Oliver has a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Sciences and Economics from the University of Virginia; a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Utah State University; and a Master of Science in Hydrology from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He is affiliated with the Society for Mining Metallurgy and Exploration and the National Ground Water Association.
