SAN FRANCISCO — Stuart Sunshine has been appointed national director of government affairs at WSP USA, a leading engineering and professional services consultancy.
In his new role, Sunshine is leading the firm’s U.S. government affairs team, which covers federal government affairs, state and local government affairs, and civic and community engagement programs across all markets – transportation, water and environment, energy, buildings, federal programs and logistics and advisory services within the U.S. His team also supports positioning, pursuits and program and project delivery across those same markets.
“WSP has always been involved in promoting and developing sound public policy for our industry,” said Lou Cornell, president and CEO of WSP USA. “Stuart recognizes the importance of engaging with our elected officials, clients and thought leaders who help shape the markets where we live and work. He has the ability to position WSP at the intersection of policy and projects.”
Since Sunshine joined WSP more than a decade ago, he has held several management and leadership positions within the firm. In 2008, he served as the San Francisco area manager, and in 2012, he assumed the role of director of state and local government affairs for U.S. Transportation.
Sunshine, a senior vice president for WSP, will remain a senior member of WSP’s national management consulting and strategic business development practice, providing WSP’s clients with advice and solutions on management, operations, policy, project development and delivery and will retain his role as director of state and local affairs for the firm.
“Stuart’s experience with government issues related to transportation has provided WSP with a valuable perspective on the issues facing local and state-wide matters and continues since expanding that vision to the national level,” said Joseph Pulicare, president of transportation for WSP USA. “With many uncertainties regarding the future direction that infrastructure planning and funding will take, Stuart’s perspective will be a valuable asset to both his team and to our clients, who will depend upon that knowledge and understanding to help shape the transportation legislative agenda.”
Prior to joining the firm, Sunshine served three San Francisco mayors in various leadership, operations and project management roles overseeing transportation and infrastructure. His roles included deputy chief of staff to the mayor, deputy executive director and acting executive director for San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, executive director of the department of parking and traffic and the director of airfield development at San Francisco International Airport.
Sunshine is a graduate of the University of Colorado – Boulder with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication, and graduate of San Francisco State University with a master’s degree in political science.
