At the outset of the project, the client set ambitious sustainability goals, including LEED certification for the super-tall tower. WSP’s built ecology team supported the implementation of these goals through LEED certification coordination, sustainable design assistance, energy analysis, daylight modeling and façade studies.
A number of solutions were implemented, including exterior fins to control solar heat gain, high efficiency HVAC systems, waste-heat recovery system, on-site capture and treatment of storm water, and utilization of building integrated renewable technologies, including photovoltaics and wind turbines.
Energy efficiency measures were also implemented, including radiant floor heating and cooling, LED lighting, high performance glazing, building management systems and daylight controls. All in all, the sustainability measures devised by the built ecology team contributed to a 30% reduction in overall energy cost from the calculated baseline, as well as a 30% reduction in water use from plumbing fixtures.
