Rehabilitation Realignment and 3D Visualisation Modelling of Kyalami Racetrack
WSP in Africa was appointed to provide rehabilitation and realignment services on the upgrade of the track. The 4.246 km anti-clockwise circuit includes 14 turns with a mix of straights, curves, sharp corners and the infamous “mine shaft”, a downhill straight and fast curve. This track has hosted World Superbike and Formula A1 single-seater racing.
Since the rehabilitation work carried out on the track during the 1990s, there has been very little maintenance performed on the track surface. The new owner needs to rehabilitate the track surface and is adding an extension to the pit straight, believing it will enhance the appeal of the circuit to the racing fraternity.
Our client requires a modern, world-class track surface and safety installations. The extension of the pit straight will provide the much-needed longer, straight section preferred by today’s competitors. This refurbishment includes realignment for three corners of the track, improving track safety, improving access to the venue and developing engineering solutions for a friendlier track-day experience.
In addition, we created a 3D visualisation model of the Kyalami racetrack as part of the restoration project. Our client needed a high-end photo realistic animated 3D virtual simulation of the track experience from various aerial and drivers’ viewpoints.
The production of a 3D visualisation is a key component in conveying design intent and enabling our client to experience the end-result in a virtual 3D simulation. The 3D visualisations also formed the basis of various media briefings and public broadcasts.
