Design challenges

Due to the size of Steyn City, it is important residents and the public can travel safely and comfortably within the surrounding areas. For this reason, several roads in and around the estate were developed and upgraded. Cue WSP, who were appointed to oversee the design and construction monitoring on various aspects, including the K46 Erling Steyn City interchange, the K46 Rose interchange, the K56 and the extension of Erling Road, Cedar Road phases 1 and 2 and Steyn City northern access road.

Numerous design constraints contributed to the project’s complexity. Construction of the Erling Road interchange was challenged by restrictions such as land, steep terrain, pedestrian accommodation, existing services and partial encroachment onto a protected wetland. Geological considerations, like underlying rock formations were also problematic, while the northern access road is situated next to Lulumisa Power Station, which has large pylons and servitudes that could not be affected.

Solutions

WSP provided civil, structural and infrastructure engineering, and played a key advisory role on road network masterplanning, network impact analysis, service provider negotiations and facilitation, development planning and facilitation between multiple parties to secure infrastructure development. The team also mobilised local expertise to address specific needs at critical stages of the programme.

In addition, WSP used an innovative Building Information Modelling (BIM) platform to design and analyse all civil engineering components, preparation of construction documentation and quantity take-offs, and production of animated 3D visualisation.

BIM enables the design team to create dynamic models of interchanges and roads, which help optimisation while accommodating geometric design criteria. Quantity take-off tools aided in determining accurate costing at various project stages, keeping designs within budget. The LandXML file format provides an effective BIM exchange format between WSP and construction companies.

Because of this pioneering platform, along with other best-practice services, all Steyn City projects, to date, have been successfully completed within budget and on schedule.
