1. What did you enjoy the most about working at WSP during your internship?
I've really loved the vibe at WSP. It's a place that really pushes us to say hi and chat with each other. Having lunch with my coworkers makes me feel like I truly belong to the team. The friendly atmosphere has really motivated me to reach out and connect with others. That sense of belonging is super rewarding. Plus, the WSP Café isn’t just a place to hang out; it’s a great spot to meet new folks and take refreshing breaks that boost our energy and creativity. On top of that, WSP organises a summer intern meet-up, which is a fantastic way to connect with other interns and get to know more about the company.
2. What was the most valuable aspect of your internship experience, and why?
My internship has been super valuable in showing me how to prepare for my future as an engineer. Being at WSP has given me a peek into how a consultancy runs and what engineers actually do. I've gained insight into an engineer's role, like how we need to anticipate problems by considering various factors like the environment, feasibility, and costs. Overall, I've picked up some great problem-solving skills and a way of thinking of being an engineer.
3. How did you interpret the culture of inclusion and diversity at WSP?
Working at WSP, I really notice that everyone here values each other's opinions. Even as an intern, my ideas are taken seriously. Plus, being part of an international company means I get to meet people from all over the globe, and we often use multiple languages when collaborating on projects.
4. What skills did you learn or improve upon during your internship?
I've really improved my communication skills. As an engineer, collaborating with different teams is a huge part of what I do. That's why it's super crucial to express our ideas clearly so everyone is on the same page. We need to simplify our thoughts into easy-to-follow steps to make sure others grasp what we're saying. On the technical side, I know how to use Google Maps and Google Earth to predict what needs to be removed or to estimate the future construction site environment. Plus, I've been learning how to read AutoCAD drawings. I have learnt how to understand what needs to be built in the corresponding area and the layout of each building in the map. Lastly, I've improve my skills in formatting reports.
5. How did your mentor/supervisor provide guidance and support throughout your internship?
Throughout my internship, my supervisor and the senior team members have been super supportive and helpful in guiding me through different tasks and challenges. At the start, my senior colleagues would give me a solid overview of the project background. For every task, my supervisor explained its significance to the overall project, which really helped me grasp how everything fits together. When I encountered new tasks, like using PDF tools, my supervisor took the time to walk me through the process step by step, making sure I got the hang of it. Even though I’m not a qualified engineer yet since I haven’t finished my degree, my supervisor has encouraged me to analyse the reports. After I share my thoughts, they offer helpful feedback on where I can improve, pointing out any key points I might have missed. I've gained so much knowledge during my time here.
