WSP's office in Peru is supervising the earthmoving works for the construction of the new Chinchero international airport by Consorcio Chinchero, which will replace the current Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport, located in the middle of the city of Cusco.
The airport is being built on a government-to-government basis at an estimated cost of US$665 million. Its construction and start-up are being carried out with technical assistance from Korea through a Project Management Office (PMO).
Once completed, the airport will cover an area of 454 hectares (including a runway -4 kilometers long and 45 meters wide-, a passenger terminal, a control tower, taxiways, as well as an aircraft parking apron, a general aviation apron, and maintenance hangars).
It is estimated that it will have the capacity to receive more than 6 million passengers per year and will be the second largest in the country, with projections to handle international connections directly, without passing through Jorge Chávez International Airport.
The service includes the development of the BIM Execution Plan, where the construction and planning specialties interact, obtaining a 4D model where the construction can be seen in real time linked to the execution schedule.
The project represents a challenge for the whole team since the intervention area is located at 3754 meters above sea level and has a large amount of rainfall during certain seasons of the year.
Another relevant consideration is that the airport site is in the area of influence of one of the seven wonders of the world -Machu Picchu- so the work must be coordinated from different specialties such as environmental, social (surrounding communities Racchi Ayllo, Yanacona, Ayllopongo) archaeological, civil, geotechnical, topographic, among others.
WSP's role will last up to 57 months, with a permanent staff of approximately 22 professionals.
