Zayed National Museum stands as a landmark of design excellence, architectural innovation, and cultural pride. Beyond being a national icon, it embodies the UAE’s vision of celebrating history while embracing modernity, a powerful tribute to the nation’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Positioned as the centerpiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, the museum which opened in December 2025, showcases the history, heritage, and values of the UAE. It tells the story of Sheikh Zayed’s leadership, and his pivotal role in unifying the Emirates and shaping the country’s social and cultural transformation.

Engineering a national icon

As part of the Foster + Partners / WSP joint venture, WSP delivered engineering design and supervision services, translating an ambitious architectural vision into a buildable, functional, and enduring structure.

The museum’s most striking features are its five tapering steel wings, which rise up to 123 metres above the landscaped mound. Inspired by the rich tradition of falconry in the UAE, these soaring structures act as thermal chimneys, using aerodynamic principles to capture fresh air and draw cooling currents naturally through the building.

Complementing these wings are extensive passive design strategies, including natural ventilation, cooling, and fair-faced concrete interiors that adapt to seasonal changes. 

Expertise has been drawn from across the globe; our multidisciplinary team spanning the UAE, UK and the US provided an enormous range of specialist design services, all collaborating to produce the finished design. 

 

WSP’s Scope of Services

The structural design was a global collaboration between WSP’s Middle East and New York structures teams, with support from the UK Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling team. The New York team focused on the complex steel wings, while the Middle East team led overall delivery, including the architectural white concrete elements, demonstrating WSP’s global expertise combined with local knowledge.

The museum includes numerous future-focused and sustainability strategies and engineering solutions including:

  • Natural ventilation system: Enables passive cooling during winter, reducing reliance on HVAC systems and thereby, energy consumption.
  • Radiant cooling system: Operates in tandem with the natural ventilation system extending the duration that the building can operate in natural ventilation mode contributing to reduced energy consumption.
  • Canadian duct system: Pre-cools incoming air, improving HVAC efficiency, resulting in better thermal performance and reduced energy consumption.
  • Energy recovery ventilation: Recaptures exhaust energy to precondition fresh air, ultimately improving energy efficiency.
  • Demand-controlled ventilation: Adjusts airflow based on occupancy, optimizing energy efficiency.
  • Energy monitoring and reporting: Continuous tracking and analysis through a Building Management System (BMS) ensures optimized energy consumption.
  • Lighting control strategies: Occupancy sensors and dimming controls adjust lighting levels for energy efficiency.
  • Exterior and interior water monitoring and leak detection: To track water usage, detect leaks early, and prevent water waste.

Through innovative structural and materials engineering, the Foster + Partners and WSP joint venture reduced steel tonnage in the building’s wings by nearly 50% and optimized steel reinforcement usage in the large curved and arched architectural white concrete walls, significantly lowering embodied carbon.

The museum’s 100-year design life required robust, durable, and precisely coordinated solutions. From mock-ups to full-scale testing of systems like passive ventilation towers and radiant floor cooling, every detail was engineered for long-term performance, resilience, and aesthetics; confirming that all exceeded design expectations.
