New York State is taking bold steps toward an energy secure future with Propel NY Energy, a 90-mile underground and submarine electric transmission project resulting from the New York Independent System Operator’s request for a proposal to bolster parts of the statewide grid.
Led by New York Transco and the New York Power Authority, this innovative $3.26 billion project will provide essential upgrades that will strengthen the electric grid’s reliability and resiliency — improvements that are necessary to deliver the energy needed to power New York homes and businesses.
As a partner with the team that is making this possible, WSP is providing permitting, engineering, program management services, and communications and outreach management to design and modernize the state’s electric grid.
Making powerful connections
Propel NY Energy is an innovative and significant electric transmission solution that will expand and upgrade the state’s transmission network across Long Island, New York City and Westchester County.
The project includes:
- Building underground and submarine transmission lines and substations;
- Installation of approximately 90 miles of new underground and submarine transmission lines, including: six new 345 kilovolt cross-linked polyethylene transmission cable, one new 138 kilovolt cross-linked polyethylene transmission cable, and nine miles of submarine cable across Long Island Sound; and
- Construction of three new substations, one underground transition vault and upgrades to four existing stations.
