The New Calumet Mine in Québec, Canada, was a lead, gold, zinc and silver mine which was partially decommissioned in the 1970’s.

The remediation and redevelopment of this site included the management of a myriad of issues including threatened flora and fauna, major soil and groundwater contamination, mining leases and mine subsidence and industrial archaeology.

Posing hazards to public health and the environment, we removed toxic contaminants and transformed this old mining site into a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and clean energy investment.

We are providing long-term monitoring services to assess the impact of the Boggabri Coal Mine operations on the area’s biodiversity.

Bats are an integral part of our ecosystems, and some bat species in Canada are currently listed as endangered due to population declines. In order to receive provincial or federal environmental authorizations, surveys to assess impacts on Species at Risk are critical for many projects. Compensation measures for bats may also be required and solutions to enhance or protect bat habitats can be integrated into restoration or mine reclamation sites.

Advising on all project stages to respect and preserve the natural nocturnal area lighting.

The development of new industry standards in South Africa to measure the success of Water Conservation/Water Demand Management in mining projects also saves costs.

Collaborating with Cardiff University, we designed a sustainable approach to treating polluted metal mine water and are implementing it on the first site of Natural Resources Wales’ nationwide programme.

After one of WSPs global mining clients completed an acquisition, we supported a common approach to responsible water management during the integration.
