As part of the Construction Innovation Expo 2022 programme, the ceremony, hosted by Hong Kong’s Construction Industry Council (CIC) on 14 December, serves as a roundup of the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) development in Hong Kong. It recognises outstanding projects, teams and individual practitioners for their contributions in the promotion and adoption of MiC that bring about innovation to improve productivity, quality, sustainability and safety of the construction industry.
We are involved in four award-winning projects, which are all named as Outstanding MiC Projects, including:
Chinese Medicine Hospital and Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute
Being the first Chinese Medicine Hospital in Hong Kong, the project comprises a 10-storey building, offering 400 beds for inpatient and day-patient care services, various clinical facilities for the public, and a platform for training and education for Chinese medicine practitioners.
Our MEP technical experts provided comprehensive building services, environmental and sustainability design consultancy, while overcoming challenges from large scale implementation of MiC and MiMEP with an extremely compact programme, successfully optimising productivity, enabling larger extent off-site prefabrication, and enhancing overall safety and quality.
Disciplined Services Quarters for the Fire Services Department
The first public works project adopting MiC in Hong Kong, the development consists of 5 domestic blocks with total 81 storeys, providing 648 units in total with ancillary facilities including multifunction room, covered walkway and recreation spaces.
As the building services engineer, we provided MEP engineering and BEAM consultancy services for the project. With our tailored design, each MiC module was pre-installed with sanitary fittings together with the water supply and drainage connection, kitchen cabinet, concealed conduits, lighting switches, socket outlets and miniature circuit breaker wiring distribution inside the kitchen.
InnoCell
As a pilot scheme of a high-rise MiC in Hong Kong, InnoCell is a 17-storey development with smart living spaces and co-creation community designed for innovation and technology talents in Hong Kong Science Park.
As the structural engineer of the project, we designed robust MiC steel modules to secure lateral stability and save construction and transportation costs. To effectively reduce the complexity of site installation, we standardised the module size with over 70% of typical structures modularised by prefabrication. By adopting MiC approach, we shortened the overall construction programme by 40%, reduced construction wastage on site as well as achieved better quality with cost-effectiveness and in a safe site environment.
The University of Hong Kong Wong Chuk Hang Student Residence
As one of the pilot MiC projects nominated by the Development Bureau, the project comprises two blocks of 17-storey buildings resting on top of a transfer plate and a 3-storey podium with carpark, functional facilities and hall, providing 1,224 hostel places with a total of 952 MiC modules for students.
We provided structural engineering services to support the design and construction on this cost effective, buildable MiC structural system that is easy for handle, erection and installation. MiC was adopted for the floors above the transfer plate and multi-unit bedroom, combined with core walls. Prefabricated polished-flooring, anti-mould emulsion paint walls and ceiling for each room, and all fixed furniture modules were completed and installed in the factory.
