WSP Garnered Four Honours at CIBSE Hong Kong Awards 2023

Organised by Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the biennial award aims to recognise remarkable building projects that deliver efficiency, quality, safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness, focusing on actual and measured performance.

We are involved in four award-winning projects, including one Winner Award and three Merit Awards. In particular, WSP was involved in all three awarded projects in the Public Use Building category of the Project of the Year Award, signifying the positive impact we deliver through our Future Ready design to the wider community.

Kowloon East Regional Headquarters and Operational Base Cum Ngau Tau Kok Divisional Police Station
Winner Award
Project of the Year Award – Public Use Building

The project is an integrated complex consists of 16-storey of police facilities with car parks providing enhanced services to the new Kai Tak community. To achieve a green government building with the emphasis on building energy efficiency and sustainability, we incorporated a number of innovative building services systems and renewable energy technologies to achieve low carbon emission.

They included the adoption of the existing Kai Tak District Cooling System (DCS); photovoltaic system and solar hot water system as renewable energy sources; CO/NO₂-based demand control ventilation, air-side heat recovery wheel and free cooling to reduce energy consumption; and use of rainwater harvesting and condensate water recycling system for landscape irrigation.

In addition, energy-efficient building envelope with low-E glazed curtain wall was adopted to ensure visible light transmittance, reduce light pollution and prevent heat losses. Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and MultiTrade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) and Building Information Model (BIM) application were implemented to facilitate the construction programme as well as smooth coordination for plant room layouts and installations.

HKUST Shaw Auditorium

Project of the Year Award – Public Use Building

Forging a well-coordinated, integrated solution for this multi-purpose auditorium, WSP played a vital role in realising the landmark with our multidisciplinary engineering consultancy services, which included adopting high-performance ring-shaped façade supported by extensive overhang structural design that blocks over 70% of solar heat, multiple green features including PV panels, motion sensors for light fittings and LED lighting, as well as the utilisation of the existing DCS in the campus to save valuable plant space while addressing concerns related to noise and vibration controls.

We have implemented smart ventilation control Aircuity System to monitor indoor air quality. Advanced acoustics separation, anti-vibration and noise control measures were implemented to create the best acoustic space for top-class performance and lectures. All systems were also equipped with wireless smart sensors enabled by full coverage of 5G network, high speed WiFi and LoRAWan network.

Tai Po Tung Cheong Street Leisure Building

To realise this 5-storey multi-function indoor sport facility, WSP adopted tailored engineering design solution with fulfilment of functionality, safety, and buildability.

Performance-based sun-path analysis was applied to predict the intensity and direction of sunlight to determine the most suitable façade fins design. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling was used to analyse wind velocity and ventilation flow to facilitate the natural ventilation design for the indoor swimming pool.

Our project team implemented several energy efficiency measures and renewable energy features, including free air cooling, occupancy-based demand control for air-condition system, photo sensors at perimeter zones to regular the operation of interior lightings, and a grid-connected photovoltaic and solar water heating system to provide primary heating for potable water for energy reduction.

Nina Mall 2
Merit Award
Project of the Year Award – Commercial/Industrial Building

Located in the heart of Tsuen Wan West, Nina Mall 2 serves as a gateway and connects all nearby developments. As the project’s building services engineer, WSP incorporated numerous innovative features to drive the development of this sustainable retail hub.

Rainwater harvesting system, bleed-off water recycling system for flushing water, and water efficient fitments were installed to minimise water consumption. LED luminaires with lighting control systems such as occupancy sensors and daylight sensors, Variable speed drives for water pumps, energy saving mode for lift cars, demand control for HVAC system, and energy-efficient HVAC equipment and filters were deployed to minimise energy consumption and enhance indoor environmental quality. A smart metering system connecting to the building management system of the development was also adopted to monitor energy use.
