Towering at over 250 metres, and with a capacity of 1,750 passengers at any one time, Ain Dubai forms the spectacular centrepiece of the Bluewaters destination and offers a sky-high perspective across Dubai’s mesmerising skyline.
WSP was appointed by Hyundai Engineering & Construction as the Lead Consultant and Architect of Record for both the wheel and terminal building elements of Ain Dubai.
As lead consultant, WSP provided expert technical input and project coordination for 11 specialist designers and suppliers appointed by Hyundai throughout the project’s lifecycle. WSP worked closely with Dubai Municipality to guide them through the complexities of the design and ultimately obtain the required approval to allow construction to proceed.
As with any record-breaking structural feats, there were significant technical challenges that the WSP team played a key leadership role in developing innovative solutions for. Our team was also responsible for 4D (3D + schedule) modelling of the wheel, terminal building, and extensive temporary works to assess the constructability and most importantly the safety of each stage of the construction programme.
The WSP team led the Hazard identification process and also prepared the safety case in consultation with the designer and independent safety advisor.
WSP worked with the internationally renowned Norwegian architect Snohetta on the design of the terminal building, a unique feature of which is the sunken Ain Dubai Plaza and the building’s roof which provides a unique and impressive access point for end users between the retail and entertainment areas of the Bluewaters development.
Eclipsing anything that has come before it, this engineering marvel now joins the ranks of Dubai’s world-renowned landmarks and sets a new benchmark for what’s possible in modern-day engineering.
WSP are also undertaking the design for the following elements on Bluewaters under a separate contract to Mirage
