WSP in Action
As a part of the project to replace a bridge that had reached the end of its lifespan, WSP was the lead member of the joint venture for Woodrow Wilson Bridge, serving as general engineering consultant for program management, construction management and inspection. The project also involved reconstructing four adjacent interchanges, two in Virginia and two in Maryland, and redeveloping Jones Point Park, a National Park Service landmark underneath the new bridge. The program was delivered with 32 design-bid- build prime construction contracts, 15 of which were environmental mitigation contracts.
During the planning phase, WSP provided construction management professionals to assist with project planning. This effort included identifying the likely contractor operations and accommodating the impact areas in the project permits, writing project-specific, corridor-wide contract special provisions that were applicable in both Maryland and Virginia, and establishing contractual milestone dates for key interface elements among the multiple construction contractors. We also provided hands-on construction engineering and inspection services. All in, the final stage of the bridge project was completed in 2013, CAD 91M below the original 2000 Financial Plan estimate.
In South Korea, the North-East Asia Trade Tower (NEATT) stands 305m tall and is the landmark structure in the Songdo International Business District. This 280,000 m² mixed-use tower provides 68 column-free floors for 19 storeys of class A offices, a 204-room hotel, 200 residential units, and an observatory/restaurant area on the top floors. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and Heerim, NEATT was the tallest building in Korea upon its completion in 2014. The tower offers spectacular views of Central Park and a panoramic view of Songdo City. WSP provided construction management and project management support services in addition to program management services for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
