What did you enjoy most about your internship experience at WSP?

Aside from the work itself, I really enjoyed the friendships and connections I made throughout my internship. Everyone was welcoming and easy to get along with, making it comfortable to ask questions and learn from one another. I appreciated how the workplace remained professional while still allowing people to joke around, have fun, and build genuine relationships, creating a positive and enjoyable working environment.

What was the most valuable aspect of your internship, and why?

Applying university knowledge to solve real-world problems is not as straightforward as it sounds. WSP equipped me with the practical ability to apply what I learned at university to solve real challenges. This valuable experience is not something every university student can easily get their hands on. Aside from that, I also value the connections I gained during my internship, from leaders and engineers to people across different disciplines.

How would you describe WSP's culture and working environment?

WSP provided a welcoming and collaborative environment where I felt valued as an intern. The guidance from my colleagues, exposure to meaningful projects, and opportunities to learn made this an enriching experience that has strengthened both my skills and career aspirations.

What skills or experiences have you gained during your internship?

I definitely gained a lot of exposure through working on different projects, especially in learning how to operate different software, read and understand drawings, and strengthen my engineering judgement. WSP gave me the chance to try out different software for modelling and calculations, which not every intern has access to.

How did your mentor, supervisor, or team support your development throughout the internship?

When I first joined, I had no working experience. My supervisor guided me from the very beginning of my internship, patiently explaining the basics, from how to read drawings and carry out conservative calculations to how to operate the software. Even though I had no prior working experience, the team still trusted me with real work, and with their guidance, I was able to gain practical experience.

What did you enjoy most about your internship experience at WSP?

I found interacting with colleagues enjoyable, both during and outside of work. During my internship, I had a close working relationship with my mentor, regularly shared lunch breaks with fellow interns, and had opportunities to connect with colleagues from other teams through company initiatives. These interactions made my internship experience more rewarding.

What was the most valuable aspect of your internship, and why?

The most valuable aspect of my internship was the opportunity to work on projects that closely aligned with my area of study, and to better understand how academic knowledge is applied in a practical setting. This also provided me with different approaches to solving problems.

How would you describe WSP's culture and working environment?

WSP's working environment was supportive, and I felt comfortable with raising questions and expressing my opinions on issues, with the feedback received aimed at developing my understanding of specific tasks.

WSP also emphasises workplace community-building through various initiatives such as the 'WSP café', through which I had the opportunity to meet and socialise with colleagues from other departments. In addition, the workplace fostered a highly collaborative culture, with colleagues regularly engaging in discussions and knowledge sharing.

I would also describe WSP as a diverse and inclusive workplace, with colleagues from varying backgrounds.

What skills or experiences have you gained during your internship?

During my internship, I learned to use structural modelling and analysis software such as SAP2000 and ETABS and worked closely with my mentor to develop component models using these tools. I also had the opportunity to further strengthen my AutoCAD skills.

Additionally, this programme gave me valuable insight into the day-to-day work of industry professionals and helped me better understand and adapt to a future career in the industry.

How did your mentor, supervisor, or team support your development throughout the internship?

Throughout my internship experience, my mentor acted as my first point of contact, patiently listening to and resolving my questions, along with providing constructive feedback on my work. My surrounding colleagues also took the time to answer explain new concepts, and even more so when my mentor wasn't available.

My mentor and fellow colleagues were also resourceful and helpfully provided source materials when I asked where specific values or analysis methods came from.
